Photographer Lewis Mackenzie knows this white-tailed eagle well and sent us these notes with his photo:
“These are huge birds, with a wingspan of around seven feet. Out of the 200 in Britain, I think about 70 are in the Outer Hebrides. Most of the birds are ringed as chicks by the RSPB so, from photos of the birds, they can be identified. This bird is a male, ten years old and hatched on the Isle of Skye before crossing the Minch to Loch Erisort. He’s been there five years and is the proud dad of two chicks over the last four years. Unfortunately, his mate may have died as I haven’t seen her since last Autumn.”
