Contemporary, handcrafted accessories inspired by nature combining Harris Tweed® cloth, Leather and Silkscreen Print
Inspired by nature, Ann creates contemporary and functional accessories. Within her practice she explores natural forms through mark-making, print and photography. These visual responses inform her pattern designs, which once refined, are silkscreen printed onto Harris Tweed® fabric. Each piece is handcrafted and celebrates the relationships between colour, pattern and form.
“Ann Charlish Studio was born out of my passion for sewing and printmaking. Having taught Art in schools for over twenty years, focussing on the creative education of others, I decided to have a break from teaching to explore the possibilities of making a career out of my own practice. I formally set up my business in 2017 after spending a few years developing potential product ideas. I now design and make individually crafted accessories using combinations of Harris Tweed®, leather and print.
I chose to work with Harris Tweed® as it is such a fabulous material from which to manipulate and create my handcrafted accessories. The woven wool is a perfect surface on which to silkscreen print as it permits a high-quality image adding to the luxury and longevity of my final pieces.
Colour is an essential element of my work and because Harris Tweed® is dyed in the wool, rather than after the wool is spun, this allows blending to take place leading to depth and variety of colour in each individual yarn.
As a result, the selected colour palettes which I decide to work with are rich and vibrant in their hues.”
