Donegal Tweed group visit

30th April

The HTA were delighted last week to host a visit to our island from representatives of the Donegal Tweed industry as part of an on-going project to share knowledge and explore links and potential partnerships.

Donegal visit 1

Three Donegal producers, Magee 1866, Molloy & Sons and Donegal Yarns, together with representatives from Donegal County Council, Donegal ETB and Údarás na Gaeltachta enjoyed a whistle-stop tour of our island in glorious sunshine, met with our mills and weavers and with the HTA Board to understand better how our unique industry operates, itself of course a unique model of partnership working.

The visit began with a civic reception hosted by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and concluded with an event to celebrate the links between the Scottish and Irish tweed industries hosted by the Consulate General of Ireland in Edinburgh.

Lorna Macaulay, HTA CEO said: “It has been a real pleasure to work with the Donegal Tweed producers and their support agencies on this project. We believe our respective industries can learn much from each other and by working together we can better raise the bar and profile of wool and woven textiles here in the UK. We here in the Harris Tweed® industry see many parallels with Donegal, not just within textiles, but also within our wider language, culture and heritage and we hope to explore these over time too.”
