Murdo Morrison (1938-2025)
23rd January
We were very sorry to hear of the recent passing of former Harris Tweed Authority board member Murdo Morrison.
Murdo, who was born in Bragar, served on our board between 1999 and 2015, and was an incredible ambassador for Harris Tweed in the ensuing years as well.
This was evidenced no better than in September of 2023, when an event was held in the Grinneabhat centre to celebrate the launch of his newly published book, ‘Sealladh agus Sgeulachdan’, which included tales about the past, the present and the way of life that people had on the west side of the Isle of Lewis.
Murdo proudly included stories with elements of the weaving of Harris Tweed®, along with some lovely photos of weavers in the community too. His home village of Bragar, as well as Arnol and the surrounding areas, were crucial to the industry he was so fond of.
On his retirement from the board, Murdo sent a letter stating: “For my time with the Authority, ‘The moments winged their way with pleasure’. And in my own words – it was a great pleasure to be of service to the present and the future Harris Tweed industry.”
Alasdair Macleod, vice chair of the HTA, said: “Murdo was a native Gaelic speaker with natural charm, a ready wit and he was very proud of his cultural heritage. He also championed the Clò Mòr at every opportunity at home and abroad on his many expeditions as President of the Robert Burns World Federation. He made an enormous contribution to the Harris Tweed industry as his knowledge of marketing and corporate affairs, gained from 30 years in a senior role with Esso Petroleum, was invaluable to the HTA.”
Murdo, who resided in Wishaw, was 86 at the time of his passing. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this sad time.
