The Harris Tweed® Journal

How good is your Gaelic?

Today’s translation:

Did you know that Harris Tweed® has its own Act of Parliament? It is the only fabric in the world to have such a prestigious level of protection. The Harris Tweed Act defines Harris Tweed® as a tweed that has been handwoven by the islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides, finished in the Outer Hebrides, and made from pure virgin wool dyed and spun here in the Outer Hebrides… Harris Tweed® cannot, by law, be made any other way or in any other place.

So let’s begin our story with pure virgin wool. Raw dirty wool is simply the clipped fleece off the sheep’s back, that’s all. Nothing has been done to it yet. It isn’t dirty really, more oily and discoloured.

An robh fhios agaibh gun robh Achd Pàrlamaid aig a’ Chlò Hearach? ‘S e an aon stuth-aodaich air an t-saoghal aig a bheil dìon sònraichte dhen t-seòrsa. Tha Achd A’ CHLÒ HEARAICH a’ mìneachadh gur e clò a tha ann a chaidh fhighe le làimh, le eileanaich anns na dachaighean aca fhèin anns na h-Eileanan an Iar, air a chrìochnachadh anns na h-Eileanan an Iar, agus air a chruthachadh le clòimh-fìor-ghlan, air a dath agus air a snìomh anns na h-Eileanan an Iar… Chan urrainn, a rèir an lagh, an Clò Hearach a bhith air a dhèanamh ann an dòigh no ann an àite sam bith eile.

Tòisichidh sinn ar sgeulachd ma tha leis a’ chlòimh fhìor-ghlan. ‘S e clòimh salach, amh an rùsg a bhios sinn a’ bearradh bho dhruim nan caorach, ‘s e sin e. Cha deach càil a dhèanamh ris fhathast. Chan eil e salach, ach dìreach brucach agus olach.
