The Harris Tweed® Journal

The Drive for Harris Tweed® Production

16th April

Be warned! Reading this tantalising excerpt may make you long for an end to self-isolation and a chance to explore the Outer Hebrides again.

‘New Drive for Harris Tweed®’ archive article

The slice of Harris Tweed® history comes from our archive at Tasglann nan Eilean – Hebridean Archives. Judging by the brightly-coloured flowers we guess it may have been written around the 1960s. In 1966, Harris Tweed® production hit its peak – 7.6 million yards (4488 miles – the distance from Stornoway to Texas) was woven by hand at the homes of islanders right here in the home of Harris Tweed®.
