The Harris Tweed® Journal

In memory of Vivienne Westwood

31st December

It is with great sadness that we learnt of the loss of Vivienne Westwood, a friend and supporter of the Harris Tweed® industry for decades. It is our understanding that Vivienne Westwood first worked with Harris Tweed in 1987. She produced an iconic Autumn-Winter 1987/88 ‘Harris Tweed®’ collection which helped generate interest in the cloth for use as a fashion fabric in very different ways, as was her nature. At the present time, Harris Tweed® remains an essential feature in many of Vivienne Westwood’s designs. Other designers followed her lead and adopted use of the cloth in their collections in the years and decades to come.

In the late 1980’s Vivienne Westwood commenced use of a logo which, we consider, acknowledged her connections with and affection for our cherished cloth. Whilst that may not have been well received by everyone in the Harris Tweed® industry, subsequently both brands have very successfully collaborated to their mutual benefit. We hope and expect that collaboration will continue for many years to come.
